I don’t know about you, but if I go too long without creating something, anything really, including writing, animation, sketching, or photography, I get irritable. Down right nasty. Just ask my wife.
It’s like this creative energy in me needs to escape, channeled through my hands, eyes, sometimes my voice. I just let it free and follow where it leads me. I’m always surprised where it leads me. As an example, this website, my first novel, and everything that goes with it, would have never happened if I had ignored that inner creative itch almost a year ago.
I’m so glad I listened to that voice and scratched that creative itch. I am sure it will lead to my salvation (that being ditching the day job so I can write full time). I’m seat-belted into this crazy ride now, and there’s no way I’m stepping off any time soon.
If you’re a writer, or a creator of anything, you owe it to yourself to listen to Elizabeth Gilbert’s words of wisdom. Maybe you’ll get something out of it, maybe not. I finished with a greater appreciation of the creative process.
Bottom line: Stay curious! (H/T to Paul for the suggestion.)
