Earlier this week, my local station 107.3 Kool FM asked its listeners “What did you wait until later in life to do, but you’re SO GLAD you did it?” So, I made a Facebook comment about writing a novel. Then shit got real.
Those who know me know I’m not a talker, I’m not a shmoozer. I would not make a good radio host. Voicing my thoughts to thousands of people through the airwaves really freaks me out. Some may say that it’s really no different than making comments on Facebook, but the immediacy of radio forces you think on your feet. I’m used to writing, and rewriting, until my thoughts are as clear as possible.
So, when Kool Mornings host Robin Farrell* asked that I call in the next morning, even though everything in my body screamed “No!”, I had to do it. I’d regret it if I didn’t. I’ll be honest, I did not sleep easy that night. However, the very short interview that resulted went well, thanks to Robin’s expertise. In hindsight, it was no big deal. I could have responded differently to some of Robin’s questions, but that’s the writer in me wanting to rewrite the past. Radio is the ultimate first draft. You get one chance to get it right. Take a listen and let me know what you think.
My choice to self-publish will require getting out there a lot more than I do. It may even be more difficult than writing books because it pushes me out of my comfort zone. Damn that comfort zone… it’s so… comfy.
One step at a time, eh?
* Robin Farrell has since moved to The Ocean 98.5 FM.
