What does it take to be a successful writer? Stephen J. Cannell has the absolute answer. It’s simpler than you think.
Stephen J. Cannell was a prolific writer of best-selling mysteries and an Emmy-award winning writer and producer of over 40 television shows, many of which I grew up watching. When I listen to his words of advice, I am struck by how down to earth he is. If there’s an ego there, it’s hard to spot. In two minutes, Stephen boils down what you need to do to become a successful writer.
It’s pretty obvious, at least it is to me now, but I won’t spoil it. What I will say, is following his advice is a daily battle for me, even with one novel under my belt. It’s not that I don’t enjoy writing or getting up early, but sometimes life (and financial obligations) derail me for a while. In the end, the writing will win and everything else will fall away. I just have to trust the process.
